Misinformation, eroding trust in media: The problem of online misinformation has become a central social challenge. One solution to help individuals build resilience to misinformation is digital media literacy training, the idea being that if people are equipped with the knowledge and tools to verify the credibility of information encountered online, they will be less likely to mistakenly believe and/or share false information. Since 2020, we have been working with a non-profit organization, MediaWise, to develop and evaluate digital literacy interventions for older adults, a group especially susceptible to misinformation, and are expanding our work to engage adolescents (Teen Fact-Checking Network) and Spanish-speaking audiences (MediaWise en EspaƱol). We have also started collaborating with another non-profit organization, PEN America, to develop and evaluate digital literacy education focused on diverse communities (Latinx, Black, AAPI, Native American), who face unique misinformation challenges that can best be addressed with tailored interventions.
