Food insecurity in the Bay Area: Food insecurity, which is defined as unreliable access to affordable and healthy food, is highest among those with chronic health conditions such as obesity and diabetes. This is due to over reliance on low-cost sources of calories which are energy-dense, nutrient-poor, and known to lead to weight gain and its related health consequences. In partnership with community organizations in San Mateo and Monterey counties, this research project aims to strengthen systems that provide healthy and affordable food options that improve health outcomes among low-income communities.
